Sanden is a small guesthouse in the wooden-house village of Lærdalsøyri, nestled between the fjord and the mountains. Each room is decorated in its own unique style, with antique furniture, ornaments and art from different decades. Here, amidst the cluster of wooden houses in old Lærdalsøyri, we also have a charming house available to let.

Winter at Sanden

Winter in Lærdalsøyri is a world of its own! During the winter months, the sun doesn’t reach down into the narrow, steep valley; we can only see its reflection from the north-facing slopes. Occasionally, snow settles over the old wooden houses, and the streets are almost deserted. The peace and quiet here are like medicine for the soul after the busy and hectic summer season, when all that can be heard from the steep slopes is the bellowing of the rutting stags.

We have a few rooms open this winter

We keep a small number of rooms available for drop-in stays throughout the winter, accessible via a key box. If you’d like to hire the Haakonsalongen for private gatherings, or even the whole guesthouse, this is possible at weekends.

Business travellers can also arrange longer stays – just get in touch with us!

The Haakon Lounge

On the ground floor, you’ll find the Haakon Lounge. Breakfast is served here during the summer season, and at weekends during the winter months you can hire the room for private dinners and social gatherings. The room is furnished in the style of an old-fashioned parlour, with antique furniture, ornaments and art on the walls.

Our lounge has served as both a shop and a café since the building was constructed in the 1840s. The Red Lounge was renamed the Haakon Lounge to commemorate the visit of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon Magnus to Sanden on Tuesday 26 September 2023.

What do our guests say about us?

Peaceful and quiet

"It’s peaceful and beautiful here, and you can take your breakfast out into the garden. It’s all those little details – both charming and lovely – that make our stay here something truly special, and we’ll definitely be back. The hosts are lovely and everything is spotlessly clean."

— M. Elizabeth

Friendly hosts

"Very friendly and welcoming hosts who have created a wonderfully well-appointed guesthouse with a cosy retro interior. Beautiful, clean rooms with a lovely atmosphere. A simple breakfast is served in yet another well-appointed room: the communal lounge. The guesthouse has its own large, lovely private garden with plenty of sunshine."

— Petter H.

Charming

"A fantastic place in an incredibly lovely location; the hosts were wonderful and the room was charming and cosy – you can see the love that’s gone into every detail here"

— IS

Like at grandmas

"It was just like coming home to my grandmother’s house, with its lovely décor, beautiful antiques and a peaceful atmosphere. Breakfast was served in the ‘living room’, which was also furnished as if it were at my grandmother’s. It’s a small and cosy guesthouse."

— Kjetil F.
